What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?

This home is off-grid and solar- powered with all the comforts/conveniences.

Property Description

No Name Key is part of the Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge(a pygmy whitetail deer), and is surrounded by the Great White Heron Refuge and the National Marine Sanctuary. About 90% of the island is state-owned for preservation. There is a paved 2 lane road via modern bridge to No Name Key, and the only utility provided is underground telephone service. The island is sparsely populated and natural with two residential only subdivisions; this home is in the most desirable subdivision, Dolphin Harbour, consisting of 3 paved parallel dead end streets off the main road, on the North side of the island. Homes in this subdivision are solar powered, with very occasional generator backup use. This house is the least expensive currently on the market there. The home was built in 1991 and has been used by the owners only 2 weeks per year since then, and never rented or loaned. The house has been highly maintained and improved during this time, including major upgrades in 2007-08 (All Energy Star appliances including: Kenmore refrigerator, 3 window AC units cool only portion of house being used & are not needed most of year, Bosch on demand propane water heater, 4 kW Xantrex XW4024 sinewave inverter/charger with generator autostart/stop control; Kubota GL7000 diesel generator uses 0.3 -.6 gal/hr and used infrequently; solar normally powers all but air conditioning). It consists of 2 stories on concrete stilts; 2BR/1BA on main level and loft on second level. The loft provides an updrafting circulation keeping the home cool in summer. Both levels have very large roofed decks (about 1000 ft2 total); the main level deck wraps around 3 sides of the house, and the second level deck faces the deep, wide canal (large powerboats and sailboats reside here) with beautiful views of the canal, neighborhood, and the Gulf (Spanish Channel, the main channel connecting the Atlantic and Gulf sides in the middle Florida Keys). Bahia Honda State Park, considered one of the most beautiful state parks anywhere, is only about 5 miles by water from the canal, and the famous living coral barrier reef with superb fishing/diving is an additional 5-7 miles in the Atlantic (all protected waters behind the barrier reef). The lot is 70 x 110 feet, wooded with native vegetation including many hardwoods, and very private since neighboring lots on both sides and across street are state owned for preservation. This part of No Name Key is beautiful, quiet, and private (the road to No Name dead ends there), yet convenient to shopping on Big Pine Key (5 min. drive or 15 min bikeride; has restaurants, Winn Dixie supermarket, Ace hardware, drugstore, building supply, etc.), as well as the larger cities of Marathon Key (about 20 min. drive N.) and Key West (about 30 min. drive South). The house is frame on concrete stilts with low maintenance vinyl exterior and aluminum eaves/soffits. New building in the Florida Keys is highly restricted and difficult for environmental impact reasons (only 10 new building permits/year are being issued for both Big Pine & No Name Keys). Existing home sales are the best way to achieve this environmentally low impact lifestyle in a marine paradise.

Neighborhood Description

No Name Key has about 40 solar powered residences, and Dolphin Harbour is the nicest subdivisions on No Name Key with paved roads. Dolphin Harbour consists of single family solar-powered residences, on 3 canals leading into Spanish Channel. Several neighboring homes are MUCH more elaborate and expensive (>$1M).

Market Area

No Name Key is a short 5 min. drive to Big Pine Key, to which it is connected via a 2 lane paved road/bridge. Big Pine Key has all needed amenities (supermarket, drugstore, restaurants, Ace hardware, building supplies, etc.). Larger cities nearby are Marathon and Key West. Miami is a 2 hour drive N.
