industry guidelines and will be LEED’s and “energy Star” certified, Photovoltaic solar panels for the total energy requirement of the house, The landscaping plan will be in accordance with DERM requirements for the conservation of tree and plant native species as well as designed for drought tolerant and resistance to hurricanes plants, Water harvesting system for irrigation feeding a mix drip and sprinkle system of irrigation for maximum cost efficiency and practicability, Energy Star” Lights fixtures, 80% CFL’s through house, Peat Moss Biofilter Performance based enhanced septic system.
For the house plant layout it was taken into consideration the homes geographical location. For this reason, Since the kitchen generates the most heat it has been located to the North which is the coolest side with no direct sunlight. We have designed a ventilation exhaust on top of the stairs to also dissipate any additional hot air. The garage is located on the South to protect the interior rooms from any direct sunlight that may create additional heat; the garage is not air conditioned. The East and West facades have roof extended eaves forming a front porch and a back patio which also protect the interior home from the direct sun.
The house layout and the LEED and “energy Star” certification will reduce house maintenance costs of up to 50%.
For example:
1. The solar water heater will reduce the cost of the water heating bill in half and the average life expectancy of a solar water heater is 20 years. “Energy Star” appliances like washing machines and dishwashers use 20% less energy and 35% less water.
2. High efficiency toilets a family of four can save from 14,000 to 25,000 gallons of water per year.
3. Rain water harvesting will save about 75 % of the total household water use per year.
4. The proper insulation and the high impact windows will reduce cost of the house cooling by 30%.
