Custom built passive solar envelope home. Southern facing, with a large greenhouse that functions both as a solar collector and part of the convection loop that envelopes the home. Outer envelope is composed of the greenhouse, attic space, rear air passages behind the house, and crawlspace. Attic vents to the atmosphere via attic fans in the summer, as does the crawlspace via air tubes that extend underground to the woods behind the house. In winter venting is closed in both the attic and crawlspace, and the lower southern sun effectively heats the home through the greenhouse. Nearly all windows face the front southern face of the house, with thick foam insulation encapsulating the northern facing rear of the house. Supplemental heat is provided by two clean burning Whitfield pellet stoves, as well as electric radiators. Typical electric usage is less $100/month, and pellet use ranges between 1 and 1.5 tons per year, depending on winter severity. Siding of the home is T-111 cedar, covered by an insulating layer of board and batten style Certainteed maintenance-free vinyl. 20 by 24 two car garage added in 2012. Eight large solar collecting windows replaced with insulated tempered clear safety glass in 2014.
