As someone who loves the usual amenities one expects in a normal grid-linked home, I used to think being off-grid meant pumping your sink water with your foot from a water collection trough, keeping your foods in a cellar, cooking on a wood stove, scrubbing your clothing clean in the nearby creek, read by the light of a candle, ect. However, with the continuous power provided by a fully automated system, I am able to use every comfort one expects on normal power! There's a lot of technical stuff to be written but for now I'll put it in a way most people would understand. This off-grid system is efficient enough to run the pump for the well, 3 fridges/freezers, one large chest freezer, 2 sets of washer/dryers, 3 air conditioners, various computers, xbox with large screen tv, kitchen appliances, power tools, ect. You can step into this place and mistake it for a normal home. You can easily run this place with the essentials only, however, and eliminate the need for power from the integrated generators. For heating in the winter and heating water year-round we use a wood-fueled boiler and have operated the boiler over the past 7 years with only dead and fallen trees straight from the canyon property!
