Serenity is calling. Country roads and green pastures lead to this custom-built home. Caronwood Estates, still occupied and owned by original designers, is a unique passive solar home nestled in the comforts of nature. Situated on 30+ acres of hardwood forest are nearly 2 acres of outbuildings and gorgeous perennial gardens created by a certified Master Gardener. Multiple gardens surrounding the home feature raised flower and vegetable beds, grapevines, fruit trees and much more. Equipped with passive solar amenity means the sun helps heat the home directly; combined with extra insulation, your electric bills are next to nothing. Before taking you inside, it’s worth mentioning that the house is surrounded by stamped concrete sidewalks, a breezy northern front porch, a large westerly screen porch with storage attic and a beautiful slate terrace with decorative pond on the southside. You are greeted at the entry with high quality Italian tile floors, a custom-built library with natural and recessed lighting, cherry wood bookshelves, and a stunning tile floor; a wide hardwood staircase leading to three bedrooms with additional study/nursery. The huge primary bedroom boasts two walk-in closets, built-in bookcases and large box bay windows. The en suite bathroom features a luxurious French soaking tub, antique cabinet with Carrera marble counter and sink. The office and two additional bedrooms are equipped with large closets and built-in bookshelves with desk. The home’s kitchen is fully equipped with custom built island, tile floor, Corian countertops, pantry, and open shelving for cookbooks. Cabinets and appliances are situated adjacent to a spacious dining area with built-in linen/china closets and large box bay windows. On the opposite side of this kitchen is a large living space with a Vermont Casting wood stove and nine-foot Pella wood-framed sliding doors leading to the spacious patio. The entire home is filled with natural light and is adorned with crown molding and ceiling fans throughout. Only a hour from Washington D.C. this could be a ideal location for the growing number of people choosing to work remotely.    Additional documentation included for the extensive list of items that convey and points of interest. What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?

More of us have become aware of the importance of being “green” and lowering our carbon footprint. Many Americans are going green to achieve household savings, energy independence, economic opportunities, grid-resilience, security and save our planet.

With passive solar energy, the sun helps heat the home directly, so there is no equipment to maintain. The design meticulously maximizes organic heating and cooling. Without central heat or air, there is no ductwork to clean and sustain.

Pre-construction, two heavy-duty vapor barriers were installed: one on ground level topped with eighteen inches of gravel, followed by a second heavy-duty vapor barrier and finished with a thick concrete slab, cured and sealed. The outer walls are six inches thick, rather than the standard four inches, and filled with insulation. The attic is also equipped with extra insulation. All windows are double-paned, and the home features light-blocking cellular shades for insulation and energy efficiency.

The south side of the home is all windows, making for an interior awash with natural light. There is a two-foot overhang of the roof on the south side, as well. Because the sun is lower on the horizon in the winter, light will fill the home throughout the day warming the tile floors. During summer, when the sun is higher on the horizon, the overhang ensures that direct sunlight does not enter. Plus, the beautiful oak and hickory trees surrounding the house provide cooling shade.
