Property Description

This is a picturesque, adobe ranchhouse handbuilt with style, atmosphere and authenticity. It is situated on 40 grassy acres studded with cedar trees, and has a nice view of Arizona's White mountains to the south.
The rooms consist of a large, open kitchen/dining room, two smaller bedrooms, guest bedroom, master bedroom, a mudroom, bathroom, sunroom, library with woodstove, and a livingroom with an adobe corner fireplace. The house also features an abundance of windows, built-in nichos and bookshelves, arched doorways, high ceilings, and a large covered veranda.
The walls are formed of handmade bricks which give a sense of massiveness and security and provide an even temperature. The floors of the kitchen and bedrooms are made of polished and waxed adobe and the livingroom and adjoining rooms are floored with pine t/g. The ceilings are pine t/g throughout.
Surrounding the house is a large fenced yard/garden area with four young fruit trees and numerous shade trees planted. In the backyard is a storage shed with an attached 14'X 8' greenhouse. There is also an 18'X 32' barn with horse pens and accomodations for goats/sheep and chickens. Please call 928-241-1037 for more information. Thanks

What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?

We believe in sustainability and simplicity and designed this home to be as independant of outside energy as possible. It is off-grid and a 390 watt solar panel/inverter/battery bank system provide the electrical power needed. There is a water catchment system in place for both the house and barn rooves with 3,200 gallons of total water storage. Water is brought into the house via gravity and grey water goes to a drain field amongst the fruit trees. The bathroom "resources" are composted, although there is plumbing in place for a flush toilet if that is desired. Because of the mass provided by the one and a half foot thick walls, heating is casual in the winter and artificial cooling is unnessesary in the summer. Propane is used for a cook range and can be used for a small built in refrigerator(we use an electric one).
The whole house, except the roof assembly, doors, windows, trim and part of the floor, is made from a natural on-site material...mud. The thick, breathable walls lend a fresh, pleasant atmosphere to the interior of the house without the use of fans, vents, and other construction industry trickery, and eliminates the chemicals and hazardous materials so common in standard construction. All excavation and the making of all the bricks were done with nothing more than shovels and a wheelbarrow.

Neighborhood Description

The property is located about 40 miles north of St. Johns, Arizona, and about 40 miles west of Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico. It is 13 miles from state highway 191. The elevation is 6100' and the fauna consists of grass, sagebrush, and juniper trees. There are four distinct seasons, none of which are extreme. Winter has cold mornings, fairly warm afternoons, and any snowfall doesn't last very long. Summer days are generally in the 80's and 90's with July and August marked by afternoon rains. Spring is rather windy and autumn is simply beautiful. There is excellent water underground and the soil grows a great garden.
The property is part of a subdivision called Red Sky Ranch which is a working cattle ranch. It has maintained dirt roads, some reasonable covenants and is very sparsely populated.
Resident wildlife includes coyotes, antelope, jackrabbits, some elk and deer and cows. This is a beautiful piece of Arizona and the Southwest.
