Located in La Plata County (population 51,334) one mile north of Bayfield (population 2300, elevation 6900 ft) in the Pine River Valley. Durango, the La Plata County seat, is located 18 miles to the west. Durango, home of Fort Lewis College is a popular adventure vacation destination as well as a progressive and culturally rich small city. Fifteen miles to the north is Vallecito Reservoir and the Weminuche Wilderness. The red rock canyons of Utah are close enough for a day trip.
