The owners of this house are chemically sensitive since being exposed to a pesticide misapplication 9 years ago. They lost their house and many of their belongings in rural Maryland because of the situation.rnrnThis house was purchased from a lady who did not like pesticides. We have lived here for 5 years. In order to protect ourselves, we painted with low VOC paint and have used no pesticides. It is also smoke free and scent free as we suffer severe headaches otherwise. rnWe use only natural cleaning products.rnrnThe kitchen cabinet doors are all wood and painted with low VOC paint and the countertops are granite with grout with no additives. rnrnThe berber carpet is original to the house and fully outgassed. We replaced the baseboards with solid wood, painted with low VOC paint as well. The windows are aluminum, unpainted. rnrnThe furnishings in the house are all wood and natural fibers. rnrnThis is a private community and the homeowners maintain the green areas. They do not spray pesticides on these areas unless necessary. We have not observed any spraying in our area the 5 years we have been here. There is also no mosquito spraying in the area, and immediate homeowners in all directions use no chemicals on their lawns.rnrnThe lake is maintained once or twice a year through an application of a chemical in the water, applied by boat. By arrangement they do not treat behind our house. A number of the residents have requested no treatment as well.rnrnThere is an orange tree in the yard that has never been treated with chemicals. It is easy to grow tomatoes and peppers and such in the winter.rnrnBest of all, the house is 20 minutes from one of the best beaches in south Florida, affording the chemically sensitive with fresh ocean air and brisk walks on the beach.


Neighborhood Description

This is a private community and has a heated community swimming pool just a short walk from the house. There is a landscaped entrance area, but the community is not gated.rnrn The schools in the area are all relatively new and are excellent. rnrnThere are 11 houses on this long cul-de-sac and ages vary. All homeowners are professionals and friendly.


Market Area

The city is a bedroom community to Ft. Lauderdale, but is presently developing its own shopping area. There are a number of existing shopping centers nearby but the city is developing a downtown area that is presently under construction, due to open next year. rnrnThere are a large number of organic and natural food stores in the area, including one discount organic food and nutrient store. rnrnThree adjacent cities have outstanding public beaches with plenty of parking, making a visit to the beach convenient. There are also a number of respected medical practitioners who work with people who have chemical sensitivities and/or allergies.rnrnThe county is located between Miami and Palm Beach along the Atlantic Ocean. To the west is the Water Conservation area which restricts development. There is a large park system and the county has purchased a large number of \"sensitive areas\" that have been left for nature to enjoy.
