What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?

The house is built using mass to hold temperatures steady and insulation to avoid heat transfer. Eight inches of foam insulation is used below the propanel metal roof and similar insulation is used on the end walls. Double glazing is framed in wood. The house is cool in summer due to a high ceiling and three vents in the roof allowing a flow of air moving out the hot air. The winter sun flows into the house and warms up the brick floor which holds the warmth for later slow release. A wood-burning stove provides back-up heating if needed. Water supply is roof capture, into cisterns holding 7500 gallons, filtered with particle filters and ultraviolet. A roof mounted 80 gallon solar hot water heater has a propane on demand flash heater providing back-up if needed. Waste water (grey not black) flows into the planter which cleans the water and grows bananas, figs and flowers. A composting toilet is used in the bathroom. Three kilowatt of solar electric energy comes from panels on two trackers which keep the panels perpendicular to the sun. An Outback inverter supplies 3.5 Kw of power to the latest technology, AGM (amalgamated glass matt), batteries and a fully automatic 14Kw propane generator.

Property Description

Quietly sited on a forested 5 acres with views over the Pecos River Valley, this house is self-sufficient having a 3Kw solar electric system, storage batteries and an automatic 14Kw. propane generator, a solar hot water system with an instant on demand propane water heater for back-up, filtered catch water system and self contained grey water system. The main bedroom gets the morning sun and has a large patio door facing east. The guest bedroom is at the west end of the house adjacent to the bathroom. Vigas are locally grown spruce with a tongue and groove ceiling. Heat is passive solar with a back-up wood stove (and electric heat can be used but that runs the propane generator), a modern Danish Morso radiant/convection unit. There is a gas infrared heater in the bathroom. Floor is locally made brick on sand bed on bedrock. The front footing is a massive 30 inches deep to support the weight of vigas and double glazed windows.
