What makes your home a Green or Healthy Home?

This home was built specifically to be an eco-friendly home, at a time when the green building movement was still in its infancy. This home was featured in Portland's first Tour of Sustainable, Green Homes in 2002 and was highlighted in a local newspaper. Almost all the natural wood for the timber frame, framing, decks, siding, hardwood Oregon white oak floors, cheery cabinets and hemlock trim are FSC certified or salvaged. We used natural products to seal the wood, and low/no VOC paints on the walls. The house was designed to take advantage of passive solar and cooling from the creek below. The carpets are wool, kitchen floor marmoleum, and bathrooms tiled. All the appliances are energy-star, light fixtures use compact fluorescents. The house has only been cleaned with eco-friendly cleaning products. All the landscaping is native vegetation, there is a rainwater catchment system, and the driveway is pervious (except for the steep part of the driveway). SIPs were used on some sections of the 50 year metal roof, and its plumbed and ready for solar panels. All waste from the construction was sorted and recycled. Homeowner has photos and documentation that verify product use and construction. Owner designed and built the home.
